Even after the reprieve of two movies today, I am already bored with the whole Blagojevich crap.
I found this interesting though.
Jane Hamsher thinks that if Caroline Kennedy wants the NY Senate Seat, then she should campaign for it.
I get her point. I do. She says that we do not need political dynasties, blah, blattity, blah. The thing is though that the Kennedys already are a political dynasty. We can't stop that. It already happened, years before I was born.
I say, get over it. If New York does not mind, then neither do I. Also, it is only for two years and then she will have to campaign for it.
Caroline Kennedy is a progressive and everything that she has done she has done with humility and honor. Give it to her. Or not. Truth is, it is not up to us, it is up to the Governor of New York. That is what our laws say. I'll abide with whatever Patterson does. I won't complain or cheer. Honestly, with Bush still in office for another 41 days, we have a whole lot of other shit to worry about.
What do you think?

Analysis and Aftermath
There are some great post-election pieces being written. Analysis of what happened and the pictures painted of the crumbling walls of the GOP.
The final map is really interesting. MSNBC breaks down the results by county, so we can drill down the results and see that Obama (Democrats) won everywhere that there is a higher population (cities). This is not so different, Democrats typically win cities, but Obama won many cities in very red states, like Wyoming and Montana. In addition, the Democrats are reaching out into the suburbs, overtaking what was once a GOP stronghold.
I think that the suburbs are fed-up with the partisanship and the extreme focus of the GOP on social issues. Suburban folks just want to be able to pay their bills, most don't care if the neighbor kid has an abortion, if there are (what was previously thought of as 'minorities' - demographics are changing and in another generation 'whites' will be the minority) living down the street or if a gay couple owns the home in the next cul-de-sac. Middle class people are less able to be divided by those GOP social issues; because they care more about having cable and getting the next generation TV, than they do this wedge issue crap. I think that the new “Republicans” are more libertarian than social conservatives and I don’t think that the GOP has figured that out.
It is also interesting to look at the margins. As of 10:01 am PT, Obama won the election 53% to 46%. He won by 7,974,965 votes. This is an amazing mandate, but what is also incredible to think about is how close many of the states not won were. When I look at some of the closer races, if we had gotten another few thousand people to the polls, Obama would have won those states too. This is an amazing factoid.
The young voters, despite popular mythology, were not necessarily the ones who carried the Obama victory. The demographics are interesting. Obama won every single demographic, except for whites, but even that margin was greater than Kerry.
The demographic analysis in the article is interesting; they approach it asking "what if" certain blocks did not vote.
I love this. Obama has been going over Bush's executive orders and signing statements and is preparing to reverse some of the most egregious crap in his first days in office. Anything that can be reversed by his signature - he is already lining up the papers to sign them. Right. Fucking. On.
This makes me smile.
The Christian Right is suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. The treatments for this disease are intense and success rates are minimal. Perhaps we will find an end to the Religious Fanatics having so much of an impact on our politics.
Some, the old school Godbots, want to dig in their heels deeper, and focus harder on the wedge issues of god, guns, gays and controlling women and their bodies. The newer evangelicals are actually reading their Bibles and discovering that Jesus actually cared more about the poor and the planet, (because the planet's health affects all people,) than He did giving onto Caesar God's law. We shall see which direction they go, but I suspect that they will just implode into a million different pieces - some more tolerable than others.
The Right Wing extremists are freaking the fuck out. They really do not know what to do except to continue to spew lies and mistruths and half-facts and fear.
The thing is that that kind of crap just does not work on people who are really afraid, of real things.
I am going to counter a theory that I proposed earlier: that people who are insecure because of uncertainty and instability are more apt to believe conspiracy theories. I do not necessarily think that this is incorrect; I just think that the Right Wing's plan to keep people too busy and so uneducated that they do not have time to pay attention to the truth of a situation has backfired on them.
I think that the far Right's BS has not only hit the lower class in such large numbers that they do not have the time to pay attention to Rush and Hannity's crap - it has also spread to the middle class in such a way that the people are so worried about paying their bills and making ends meet that they do not have the energy to worry about whatever extremist bile that Rush and Hannity are selling. It backfired. For this I am grateful.
Eleanor's article really does not say anything much different than we have all been talking about since Tuesday; really I linked to it because I love her Newsweek photo. She looks fabulous in the photo and I just thought people should see it.
(PS: There is not any more...not even any photos of journalists that I think are better than their real life look. Clicking the "read more" will just lead to the many thousands of comments that my blogging generates...heh.)

*61 percent of Obama's votes came from white voters; 90 percent of McCain's came from white voters.
*23 percent of Obama's votes came from black voters; only one percent of McCain's came from African American voters.
*Latino voters accounted for 11 percent of Obama's vote and six percent of McCain's.
*Twenty-three percent of the Obama voters were under age 30 but only 13 percent of McCain backers were.

"A team of four dozen advisers, working for months in virtual solitude, set out to identify regulatory and policy changes Obama could implement soon after his inauguration."

New Polls
I'm sure that you all have heard about the new poll showing Obama with his widest lead yet.
When I woke up this morning and turned on MSNBC, I was a little surprised at what I was hearing. Here was the analysis, in summary.
It was one of the most interesting, no shit analyses that I have ever heard.

When I woke up this morning and turned on MSNBC, I was a little surprised at what I was hearing. Here was the analysis, in summary.
When John McCain acts like an asshole, the people actually perceive him to be an asshole.
When John McCain runs his campaign like a great big dick, the people see him as a great big dick. The voters really do not like big dicks.
When Sarah Palin acts like a moron, the people question her ability to be Vice President.
When Sarah Palin riles up her crowds and foments violence, the voters notice that she is fomenting violence and riling up her crowds.
In summary, when John McCain and Sarah Palin show that they are cruel, unqualified, have poor temperament and seek to divide the Nation rather than bring us together - the people actually prefer the candidate who appears qualified, calm and seeks to bring us together.
It was one of the most interesting, no shit analyses that I have ever heard.

I Will Continue to Harp
I know that I have been harping on this for quite a while now and I will continue to do so until I am certain that we have won this election.
The GOP is doing everything possible to make sure that they steal this election. They have purged voters from the rolls by the millions. It is terrifying that these people might just get away with this.
According to Greg Palast on the Thom Hartmann show, 20% of voters in Colorado have been purged. 20%!!
I am furious at these GOP assholes and I am angry that the Democratic Party is not working harder to address this. So, it is up to us to educate the people and to share the truth.
The Republicans scream endlessly about the nonexistent "voter fraud" while the Dems are virtually silent about the Election Fraud. Again, the voters are doing just fine, leave them alone. It is the people working to rig the elections that are the problem.
A few tips from Palast:
• Check your registration.
• Do not accept a provisional ballot; they are placebos and will be thrown away.
• You must raise hell if you have been purged. Be ready for a fight.
• Do not mail in your vote. If you are an absentee voter and have been purged, you will not be notified. If you have been purged, your vote will be thrown away and you will never know that your vote has been thrown away.
• Vote early where you can and if there is a problem - raise hell! If you vote early you have more of an opportunity to contact attorneys and get the help that you need to be reinstated.
• Educate others.
• Raise Hell!
Palast has teamed with Bobby Kennedy and they have written a comic book; Steal Back Your Vote! It is a detailed book showing exactly what the GOP have done and includes instructions on how to combat it.
Please, pass it on.
I know that the polls look really good right now, however, it does not matter which candidate you prefer if they do not count your vote.
UPDATE: Demand that your candidates stand up for voters and take the pledge.

A Lollipop and Some Sunshine
I just need a little feel good Bits and Pieces.
A Non-Fiction Camelot
I really do like their relationship and I think that it is high time that America have some of that reality to hang our hats on. Wouldn't it be nice to watch how a self-confident, self-assured man interacts with and Loves a self-confident, self-assured and powerful woman? It is a role-model relationship that I think America would benefit from. It makes me smile.
Debate poll internals.
Wow. Those are amazing numbers. No wonder the McCain camp is spinning his 'win' so substantially. I actually heard one of their surrogates claim that "McCain was the professor and Obama was the student." Heh. McCain the professor?! (I thought being a professor was a bad thing?) This made me smile too.

A Non-Fiction Camelot
"Elect Barack Obama. That way, we get the gift of seeing two people having an easeful friendship with each other. We get as a role model two people who communicate with each other as equals and stand beside each other as true partners. If we elect Barack Obama we are electing a new possibility in our relationship lives as a nation: respect, affection and authenticity. Michelle and Barack speak clearly and openly. You know she won't bullshit you or embarrass you by playing the demure little wife. We're ready to see that kind of relationship, and we hope you are, too. The question is: are we as a nation ready to end our national addiction to duplicity, phony adoration and Stepford wifedom in the White House?"

"The CBS poll of undecideds has more confirmatory detail. Obama went from a +18 on "understanding your needs and problems" before the debate to a +56 (!) afterward. And he went from a -9 on "prepared to be president" to a +21."

I'm just gonna say this...
Everyone is flippin' out that Obama is not doing X and he is doing Y and he probably is not electable and what if Hillary was right and if only this or what if that and how come he is not sitting in the White House right fucking now solving problems?!?!
First of all, Chuck Todd says that a 5-6 point lead translates into something like 350 electoral votes. 350 electoral votes is really, really good.
This map is good but this one is better. Either way - Obama beats 270 in both of them. I don't care if he gets 271...just as long as it is more than McCain.
And - about those 5-6 point leads. The race is NOT a tie. And Obama's lead has been consistent and constant.
Although I did not read the earlier provided link by SoS, I got the gist of the poster being thrilled to death about Obama's ground game. The guy might have been overly creamed about registering voters, but he was not wrong about the mobilization. It is a big deal and the real deal. Not only are we registering so many new voters, the Republicans, in 26 states or so, have lost over 1.4 million registered Republicans. Remember, the polls do not reflect new voters and young people with cell phones only.
Maybe the pessimism is fueled by the trappings of a dumb ass media. Or, maybe we are all just so wounded from 7 years of the Bush Administration robbing us blind and beating us to death, perhaps the bruises are so deep that we do not believe in anything anymore. Maybe we are so used to bitching and being right about the destruction around the corner that we are incapable of dealing with anything that might be OK. Anything that might actually help this country move forward a little, heal a little, just seems like pie in the sky delusion. Don't know.
What I do know is that the other post that I was going to put up I wrote a week or so ago...it is titled "We Are So Screwed" - I just could not go there right now, again, still. I deserve to be optimistic for a minute. To feel fucking OK.
We have got to get Obama's back and start doing some of the shit for him that we all complain that he isn't doing right. We could post all of the McCain gaffes. We could outline his flips and flops and most certainly McCains absolute hypocrisy. We could even (well, the more media savvy ones) could make some very cool anti-McCain commercials. The YouTubes just right there, waiting for an upload.
Besides, I want to see this VP picked. This would just make everything right and good with the world.
