Sister adopted 2 donkeys for Christmas...there's so many people that are seeing hard times that horses and donkeys are being left in open fields, homeless. So we brought our two home.

Man, they are incredibly precious, kind and cuddly. We've gotten them bells for their foreheads, red ribbons for their manes and blankets to keep them warm. Of course it means dragging bales of hay across her field to feed them, but what the heck.

mainsailset, That's what I wanted to do when I lived in CO... have wide open spaces to live and have lots of animals.
Ended up buying in a track housing area with 1 1/4 acre, couldn't build or do anything on it. Strict codes... disappointed, but what we pay here in AZ for energy cost for the pool and A/C we could have fed those animals.

Happy the wife has a job still nowadays.

Jeebus. That's horrible - but I am so glad that your sister took them in, they need some loving.

I have heard that animal shelters are the same way right now; filled with cats and dogs that people can no longer afford. It breaks my heart. That is why I am not allowed to see pictures or visit websites or certainly, never, ever go to shelters. I have, more than a few times, been on the phone from a shelter being talked down from bringing them home.

Wow. That is a ton of land SoS...compared to where we live. I grew up on 3 acres and have always hated not having a big chunk of land.

Mainsailset, I applaud your Sister. I recently read this story, and it breaks my heart. Why must we control everything that doesn't fit neatly in a box?

In St. Louis, a developer built million dollar homes in a wooded area. Of course, deer have roamed the area for hundreds of years. The wealthy don't like deer on their well-manicured yards. So what do you do? You kill them. I suggest not needlessly building in wooded areas heavily populated by deer.

It is estimated that 100 years ago, as many as two million horses were roaming free United States. In 200the1 National Geographic News estimated that the wild horse population had decreased to about 50,000. Currently, the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory board states that there are 32,000 free roaming horses in ten Western states, with half of them residing in Nevada. The Bureau of Land Management is seeking to reduce the total number of free range horses to 27,000, possibly by selective euthanasia.

Judith, you're talking to the choir as sister has an adopted Mustang as well. Daily we follow the stories and legislature of those who intend to kill off the helpless. Very personal.

Our local grocer holds out overripe grapes for me which I use as treats for the beasties. They are all comics at heart so it doesn't take much to entice their silly side out.

The local humane society has over 100 horses and donkeys right now that have been dropped off. Can't even imagine and I'm sure there are some heartbroken kids out there that this has happened to them. Terrible times.

Mainsailset, one doesn't naturally think about animals during times such as these, yet they are probably the first to suffer or be given away. It is truly sad.

You and your Sister are wonderful to take care of these animals. I wish everyone could or would.
