Welcome Back, here's The Black Hand.

I've been vacationing obviously, at several undisclosed locations. I wish I could say it had been wonderful and relaxing . . maybe my next holiday will be better.

Apparently, SoapBlox got hacked, and it took down primarily Pam's House Blend, My Left Wing and several other progressive blogs, but didnt affect all of the Blox customers.

We've known that Soapy was carrying a lot of eggs in the basket, and so far it hasn't mattered - the service and blogs had been so important for the liberal blogs in terms of accessibility and affordability that we were able to look the other way in terms of the vulnerabilities.

I think the more important story is why the unknown person(s) were trying to cast blame at astalavista. You look at the web records and hack tagging (graffitti), and it smacks of someone framing what has been a fairly gray-to-white hat IT security forum. The forums themselves also don't contain any discussion of Soapblox or the affected server host.

Progressive Historians moved off of SoapBlox about 18 months ago . .

I'm so out of it, you could have written this in Greek, and I would have understood it better.

So, a server that people's blogs are hosted on was hacked? And they're trying to blame the Terminator? Why? Who? What? When? Might be time to hang up my keyboard and crawl back into my cave...

Ooops, I forgot to mention: welcome back, idio! I figured you were on vacation. It sounds like you didn't have the greatest time, though, or else you were in the same snowed in boat we all were. Hope the new year's better!

Welcome back Id.

I woulda sent a "where the hell are you and are you OK?" email, except I saw a draft of a post that you almost put up telling us you were going on sabbaticle.

Glad to have you home.

I am with Coyote on your post...

What is the motive and who are you accusing of having it?

Soapy is the owner and sole employee of SoapBlox. Blogspot has probably hundreds of employees. So it's literally several eggs in one person's basket.

The hacker(s) claim it was an "astalavista" hack - but hastalavista is a cutting-edge security forum for IT admins and other legitimate, business-legal types to work and discuss the hackers acting maliciously against them.

Until the attack, these regular good acting guys never discussed SoapBlox, much less any vulnerabilities it might have.

I couldn't tell you if it was an attack really on astalavistas reputation, SoapBlox itself, or both. Inconclusive data. SoapBlox might have been the highest profile target of opportunity.

However, considering Soapy's software is an outgrowth of DK's platform, it might actually have been a test run of an exploit that may work on DailyKos. But that's extreme speculation on my part.

If it had been Ahhhnold, it's be a lot easier to throw his ass out of Cali-FOHR-nya. :)

It was a rough holiday season for me. Not enough done around the house, relatives pissing me off over my son because they think he's somehow in need of more attention because his parents divorced while his sister so badly wants their attention, and a last-minute trip to Mississippi to visit friends and finding out I was so not in the right place to take this trip and hopefully not ruining their friendship.

No chance it was a government hack? The timing is suspect.
Possibly a going away present from the bu$h administration for the headaches those dastardly lefty blogs caused?

Yes, the tin foil hat is always on!

Thanks, idio! Sounds to me like an attack on progressive blogs.

It was a rough holiday season for me... relatives pissing me...

Damn sorry to hear it Id... different circumstances but same results many times over during my past Holiday celebrations. Seems like my family can never gather for the Holidays without someone pissing a brother, sister or mother off.
I'm just as guilty but I've come to love my quiet Holidays without the rest of crowd.

What's this family thing people keep talking about? Why hang out with people you don't like? I've never understood that...

Idio, welcome back.

Do what our family did. We made it clear that our relative was no longer welcome Christmas Eve with the rest of the family. Best decision we ever made.

Feeling better, Judith?
